On May 9, 2010, representatives of the MDHCC, joined by representatives of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Montgomery County met with Congressman Chris Van Holen, Lilian Cruz, and senior-level staff members of the offices of Senator Cardin and Congressman Cummings on issues impactful to small and hispanic-owned businesses. Issues discussed included the following:
1. Accelerating Job Creation
2. Removing the capital gains tax paid by businesses for two years as part of Economic Recovery Legislation
3. Increasing the available credit to small businesses
4. Placing a moratorium on 8(a) graduations so that more 8(a) can participate in Stimulus Funded programs
5. Limiting large business participation in the SBIR programs
6. Establishment of a procurement academy to train up to 20,000 procurement officials
7. Support for Comprehensive Immigration reform...citing Senator Lindsay Grahams call for bi-partisan efforts to craft legislation in this area.
Congressman Van Holen was very appreciative of our chamber's leadership on issues of importance to the small and hispanic business community. Representing our chamber were: Chair, Y. Maria Welch, and Board Members, Jerry Godwin, Juan Muñoz, Gilberto de Jesus and Ricardo Martinez. Representing the HCCMC was Rosalinda Delgado.
On May 3, 2010, Veronical Cool, Wachovia Bank, Theresa Daytner, Daytner Construction, and Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez were honored as part of the 2010 class of the Maryland Top 100 Women. Congratulations to these deserving powerful Latina leaders. Their recognition is ours as well.
