Queridos Amigos,

On January 7, 2010, the City of Bowie held a luncheon for United States House of Representatives Majority Leader, the Honorable Steny Hoyer.  Representatives from the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce were invited to participate in the meeting, which was focused on what Congress should be doing to help the business community and, in particular, the small business community succeed.

In attendance were the Chair, Ms. Y. Maria Welch, immediate past chair Mr. Ricardo Martinez, and Joseph Morales.  Other chambers in the area were also invited and in attendance as well as other local public figures.  Mr. Martinez had the opportunity to express the concern among many of our members that the current federal procurement system disadvantages small businesses and that it should be revamped.

Congressman Hoyer agreed and asked that Mr. Martinez follow up with his staff on ways in which this issue can be remedied.  The concern Mr. Martinez raised was echoed by other small business representatives who pointed out that the current practice of bundling contracts that are awarded to large business concerns and the centralization of contracting offices away from the areas where the contracts are to be carried out are also harming small businesses.

One additional issue affecting small businesses, also raised at the meeting, was the lack of uniformity of certifications among federal agencies.  Because many agencies have different requirements for certification, it becomes difficult for small businesses to compete for contracts in other industries.  We look forward to continue to be strong advocates of our members before Congress, the State Legislature and local governments.   If there are issues that affect your business and you believe the chamber can help, please contact us.

 Regards,
